John Backer attended UNL for his undergraduate studies and joined the University Police Department as a Community Service Officer in 2002. Since that time, he has served in a variety of roles and ranks including uniformed patrol, Investigator, Patrol Sergeant, Investigations Sergeant, Captain of Patrol Services, and Captain of Administrative Services. John received his Master’s in Criminology and Criminal Justice from UNO in 2023. A few areas of professional interest for John are dignitary protection, threat assessment and management, and leadership, and a substantial portion of his current position is to coordinate with Nebraska Athletics for the overall safety and security of all athletic contests including Nebraska football games. John’s hobbies include camping with his family, raising farm animals, and an irresistible urge to tinker with just about anything
